What is perimenopause?

As women age, we experience a decline in the production of estrogen and progesterone; two hormones closely tied to the reproductive system. Once the amounts are low enough, the ovaries will eventually cease to run through a normal menstrual cycle. Perimenopause refers to the early stages of these hormonal shifts, where symptoms may be fleeting, or even disappear for some time before returning.

What are the signs I may be entering perimenopause?

Perimenopause signals the beginning of a gradual process of change for your reproductive system. By paying close attention to your body, you may be able to notice the following signs:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Bladder irritability
  • Hot flashes
  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Insomnia
  • Decreased libido
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained mood swings

If you’re noticing an increased presence of any of the above symptoms, this could be an indication that you have begun to enter menopause. If you’re uncertain, speaking with your health practitioner is a fantastic way to eliminate any confusion and address any additional questions you may have.
